Skiriamos dvi klasės – vienaskilčiai (turi vieną gemalo sėklaskiltę) ir dviskilčiai (turi dvi gemalo sėklaskiltes). Paplitę visose gamtinėse juostose. Daugelis yra maistiniai, pašariniai, vaistiniai, techniniai, prieskoniniai augalai. Fotosintetina didžiąją dalį organinių medžiagų, kurias vartoja gyvūnai ir žmonės. atitikmenys: lot.
